Daily Qur'an & Hadith 01 Oct 2014 (05 Zhu'al-Hijjah 1435)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[33].Surah Al-Ahzab [The Confederates]

Ayat 26. And those of the people of the Scripture who backed them (the disbelievers) Allah brought them down from their forts and cast terror into their hearts, (so that) a group (of them) you killed, and a group (of them) you made captives.

Ayat 27. And He caused you to inherit their lands, and their houses, and their riches, and a land which you had not trodden (before). And Allah is Able to do all things.

Tafseer of Surah Al Ahzab (The Confederates) Ayat 26 and 27. And those of the people of the Book who aided them - Allah did take them down from their strong holds and cast terror into their hearts. (So that) some ye slew, and some ye made prisoners. The reference is to the Jewish tribe of the Banu Qurayzah. They counted among the citizens of Madinah and were bound by solemn engagements to help in the defense of the city. But on the occasion of the Confederate siege by the Quraysh and their allies, they intrigued with the enemies and treacherously aided them. Immediately after the siege was raised and the Confederates had fled in hot haste, the Prophet turned his attention to the treacherous "friends" who had betrayed his City in the hour of danger. The Banu Qurayzah (see last note) were filled with terror and dismay when Madinah was free from the Quraysh danger. They shut themselves up in their castles about three or four miles to the east (or north east) of Madinah, and sustained a siege of 25 days, after which they surrendered, stipulating that they would abide by the decision of their fate at the hands of Hazrat Saad Ibn Muadh, chief of the Aws tribe, with which they had been in alliance. Saad applied to them the Jewish Law of the Old Testament, not as strictly as the case warranted. In Deut. 20:10-18, the treatment of a city "which is very far off from thee" is prescribed to be comparatively more lenient than the treatment of a city "of the people, which the Lord thy God does give thee for an inheritance," i.e., which is near enough to corrupt the religion of the Jewish people. The punishment for these is total annihilation: "thou shall save alive nothing that breatheth" (Deut. 20:16 ). The more lenient treatment for far-off cities is described in the next note. According to the Jewish standard, then, the Banu Qurayzah deserved total extermination-of men, women, and children. They were in the territory of Madinah itself, and further they had broken their engagements and helped the enemy. Saad adjudged them the mildest treatment of the "far-off" cities which is thus described in the Jewish Law: "Thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword: but the women and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself, and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the Lord thy God hath given thee" (Deut. 20:13-14). The men of the Qurayzah were slain: the women were sold as captives of war: and their lands and properties were divided among the Muhajirs. Ayat 27. And He made you heirs of their lands, their houses, and their goods, and of a land which ye had not frequented (before). And Allah has power over all things. If this part of the Surah was revealed after the autumn of the Hijrah year 7, it refers to the result of the Khyber expedition of that autumn. Khyber is a Harrah or volcanic tract, well-watered with many springs issuing from its basaltic rocks. It has a good irrigation system and produces good harvests of grain and dates in its wet valleys, while the outcrop of rocks in the high ground affords sites for numerous fortresses. At present it is inhabited chiefly by men of the race of Hazrat Bilal [RA](the Abyssinian) who played a prominent part in the expedition. It is a sort of island in the deserts on the outskirts of Najd . In the Prophet's time there were Jewish colonies settled here, but they were a source of constant trouble, especially after the Siege of Madinah. It became a nest of all the hostile Jewish elements expelled for their treachery from elsewhere. Its capital, Khyber, is about 90 miles due north of Madinah. Its inhabitants offered some resistance, and 'Ali, though he had just risen from a bed of illness, performed prodigies of velour. After its surrender, a land settlement was made, which retained the cultivators of the soil on the land, but brought them under control, so that no further focus of active hostility should remain near Madinah. The terms of the settlement will be found in the Maghazi of al Waqidi.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: I said: "O Messenger of Allah  [SAWW](PBUH) ! We consider Jihad as the best deed, should we not then go for Jihad?'' The Messenger of Allah  [SAWW](PBUH) said, "The best Jihad for you women is Hajj Mabrur (i.e., one accepted by Allah).''

[Al-Bukhari Book 02, Chapter 26, Hadith # 595].

Lesson : This Hadith brings out the following points:

1. Hajj is compulsory once in a lifetime for those who have the means for it.

2. Unnecessary questioning is disliked.

3. Those who believe in Allah and His Prophet  [SAWW](PBUH) are required to do what they are ordained and abstain from what they are forbidden.

Daily Qur'an & Hadith 30 Sep 2014 (04 Zhu'al-Hijjah 1435)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[33].Surah Al-Ahzab [The Confederates]

Ayat 25. And Allah drove back those who disbelieved in their rage; they gained no advantage (booty, etc.). Allah sufficed for the believers in the fighting (by sending against the disbelievers a severe wind and troops of angels). And Allah is Ever All Strong, All Mighty.

Tafseer of Surah Al Ahzab (The Confederates) Ayat 25. And Allah turned back the Unbelievers for (all) their fury: no advantage did they gain; and enough is Allah for the believers in their fight. And Allah is full of Strength, able to enforce His Will. In spite of the mighty preparations and the great forces which the Makkans, in concert with the Central Arabian Bedouins, the discontented Jews, and the treacherous Hypocrites, brought to the siege of Madinah, all their plans were frustrated. Their fury availed them nothing. They departed in hot haste. This was the last and dying effort. The initiative thereafter lay with the forces of Islam.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said,  "(The performance of) `Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous `Umrah; and the reward of Hajj Mabrur (i.e., one accepted) is nothing but Jannah.''

[Al-Bukhari Book 03, Chapter 27, Hadith # 001].

Lesson : as mentioned above in Hadith Almighty Allah emancipates most of His slaves, both men and women from the Hell-fire on this great day. Millions of pilgrims, who by virtue of their sincere repentance, try to seek the Pleasure of Allah certainly stand to earn Allah's Pardon for their sins and thereby emancipation from the Hell-fire. May Allah grant us this grace of His.

Daily Qur'an & Hadith 28 Sep 2014 (02 Zhu'al-Hijjah 1435).

English Translation of Al-Quran

[33].Surah Al-Ahzab [The Confederates]

Ayat 23. Among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah [i.e. they have gone out for Jihad (holy fighting), and showed not their backs to the disbelievers], of them some have fulfilled their obligations (i.e. have been martyred), and some of them are still waiting, but they have never changed [i.e. they never proved treacherous to their covenant which they concluded with Allah] in the least.

Tafseer of Surah Al Ahzab (The Confederates) Ayat 23. Among the Believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah. of them some have completed their vow (to the extreme), and some (still) wait: but they have never changed (their determination) in the least: In the fight for Truth were (and are) many who sacrificed their all-resources, knowledge, influence, life itself- in the Cause, and never wavered. If they won the crown of martyrdom, they were blessed. Such a one was Saad Ibn Muadh,. The chief of the Aws tribe, the intrepid standard-bearer of Islam, who died of a wound he had received in the Battle of the Trench. Other heroes fought valiantly and lived, always ready to lay down their lives. Both classes were staunch, they never changed or wavered.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said,  "Whoever performs Hajj (pilgrimage) and does not have sexual relations (with his wife), nor commits sin, nor disputes unjustly (during Hajj), then he returns from Hajj as pure and free from sins as on the day on which his mother gave birth to him.''

[Al-Bukhari Volume 02, Book 26, Hadith # 596].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Hadith the true meanings of "Rafath'' intercourse but it also signifies obscene and frivolous talk and the expression of desire to one's wife. Since coition with one's wife is forbidden during Hajj, so conversation with her on this subject or talking for amusement is also disliked. "Fisq'' means disobedience of Allah and quarrelling with people. One must avoid both of them during Hajj. The Hajj which is performed with all these restrictions has the merit that one is totally purged of sins. But this purification is from sins which come in the category of minor sins and which relate to the Rights of Allah. Major sins relating to the Rights of Allah and lapses in respect of the rights of people are not pardoned without sincere repentance and compensation to the aggrieved. .

Daily Qur'an & Hadith 29 Sep 2014 (03 Zhu'al-Hijjah 1435).

English Translation of Al-Quran

[33].Surah Al-Ahzab [The Confederates]

Ayat 24. That Allah may reward the men of truth for their truth (i.e. for their patience at the accomplishment of that which they covenanted with Allah), and punish the hypocrites if He will or accept their repentance by turning to them in Mercy. Verily, Allah is Oft Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Tafseer of Surah Al Ahzab (The Confederates) Ayat 24. That Allah may reward the men of Truth for their Truth, and punish the Hypocrites if that be His Will, or turn to them in Mercy: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Before the Throne of Allah's Mercy there is always room for repentance and forgiveness, even after treason and crime: but the forgiveness will be according to Allah's Will and Plan, which will judge the penitent's sincerity and capacity for good to the nicest degree in his favor. Cf. also 33:17.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) was asked, "Which deed is the best?'' He [SAWW](PBUH) replied, "Faith in Allah and His Messenger.'' He [SAWW](PBUH) was asked, "What is next?'' He (PBUH) replied, "Jihad (holy fighting) in the Cause of Allah.'' Then he was asked: "What is after that (in goodness)?'' He [SAWW](PBUH) replied, "Hajj Mabrur (which is accepted by Allah).''

[Al-Bukhari Book 01, Chapter 02, Hadith # 25].

Lesson : as mentioned above Hadith "Different acts have been regarded more meritorious in different Ahadith. For this reason, some scholars have performed the justification that the word mun "whoever" is the keynote in such cases. That is, such and such acts come in the category of eminent acts or they have been mentioned with reference to circumstances and time or place. For instance, at certain times or at certain places or for certain persons, performing Salat in the early prescribed hours is more meritorious, or Hajj through representative or Jihad is more meritorious, etc.

Daily Qur'an & Hadith 27 Sep 2014 (01 Zhu'al-Hijjah 1435)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[33].Surah Al-Ahzab [The Confederates]

Ayat 22. And when the believers saw Al-Ahzab (the Confederates), they said: "This is what Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad  [SAWW](PBUH) had promised us, and Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad  [SAWW](PBUH) had spoken the truth, and it only added to their faith and to their submissiveness (to Allah).

Tafseer of Surah Al Ahzab (The Confederates) Ayat 22. When the Believers saw the Confederate forces, they said: "This is what Allah and His Messenger had promised us, and Allah and His Messenger told us what was true." And it only added to their faith and their zeal in obedience. This is in contrast to what the Hypocrites said in verse 12 above. The divine promise of help and success is contingent upon our striving and faith. Nothing comes to the poltroon and the skeptical idler. Dangers and difficulties, and conflict with Evil, are foretold us, and we must meet them with fortitude and courage.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) delivered a Khutbah and said, "O people! Hajj (pilgrimage to the House of Allah) has been made incumbent upon you, so perform Hajj.'' A man inquired: "O Messenger of Allah, is it prescribed every year?'' He [SAWW](PBUH) remained silent till the man repeated it thrice. Then he  [SAWW](PBUH) said, "Had I replied in the affirmative, it would have surely become obligatory, and you would not have been able to fulfill it.'' Afterwards he said, "Do not ask me so long as I do not impose anything upon you, because those who were before you were destroyed on account of their frequent questioning and their disagreement with their Prophets. So when I order you to do something, do it as far as you can; and when I forbid you from doing anything, eschew it.''

[Muslim Book 007, Chapter 71, Hadith # 3095].

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Al-Ahzab Ayat 22. "Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad  [SAWW](PBUH) had spoken the truth" This Hadith brings out the following points:

1. Hajj is compulsory once in a lifetime for those who have the means for it.

2. Unnecessary questioning is disliked.

3. Those who believe in Allah and His Prophet  [SAWW](PBUH) are required to do what they are ordained and abstain from what they are forbidden.
