Daily Qur'an & Hadith 06 March 2015 (14 Jamadi Al `Awwal 1436)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[37].Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks)

Ayat 6. Verily! We have adorned the near heaven with the stars (for beauty).

Ayat 7. And to guard against every rebellious devil.

Ayat 8. They cannot listen to the higher group (angels) for they are pelted from every side.

Ayat 9. Outcast, and theirs is a constant (or painful) torment.

Ayat 10. Except such as snatch away something by stealing and they are pursued by a flaming fire of piercing brightness.

Tafseer of Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks) Ayat 6. We have indeed decked the lower heaven with beauty (in) the stars,- Cf. 67:3-5.'Stars' may be taken here in the popular sense, as referring to fixed stars, planets, comets, shooting stars, etc. On a clear night the beauty of the starry heavens is proverbial. Here they are meant to illustrate two points: (1) their marvelous beauty and their groupings and motions (apparent or real) manifest and typify the Design and Harmony of the One true Creator: and (2) the power and glory behind them typify that there is a guard against the assaults of Evil. Ayat 7. (For beauty) and for guard against all obstinate rebellious evil spirits, Verses 7-11 seem to refer to shooting stars- Cf. 15:17 -18, 53. The heavens typify not only beauty but power. The Good in Allah's world is guarded and protected against every assault of Evil. The Evil is not part of the heavenly system: it is a thing in outlawry, merely a self-willed rebellion-"cast away on every side, repulsed under a perpetual penalty" (verses 8-9). Ayat 8. (So) they should not strain their ears in the direction of the Exalted Assembly but be cast away from every side, We can form a mental picture of the Court of the Most High, in the highest heaven, conforming to the highest idea we can form of goodness, beauty, purity, and grandeur. The Exalted Assembly of angels is given some knowledge of the Plan and Will of Allah. Evil is altogether foreign to such an atmosphere, but is actuated by feelings of jealousy and curiosity. It tries to approach by stealth and overhear something from the august Assembly. It is repulsed and pursued by a flaming fire, of which we can form some idea in our physical world by the piercing trail of a shooting star. Ayat 9. Repulsed, for they are under a perpetual penalty, Ayat 10. Except such as snatch away something by stealth, and they are pursued by a flaming fire, of piercing brightness.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: Some people asked the Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) about soothsayers. He [SAWW](PBUH) said, "They are of no account.'' Upon this they said to him, "O Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) ! But they sometimes make true predictions.'' Thereupon the Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, "That is a word pertaining to truth which a jinn snatches (from the angels) and whispers into the ears of his friend (the soothsayers) who will then mix more than a hundred lies with it.''

[Muslim Book 26, Number 5535].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah As-Saffat Ayat 8. They cannot listen to the higher group (angels) for they are pelted from every side" This Hadith brings out the following points: Kahin (soothsayer), Munajjim (astrologer) and Arraf (foreteller) have similar characteristics but with a slight difference. All of them make predictions about the future. Kahin would overhear some jinn and disclose the secret to people which would sometimes prove true, because the jinn's source of information was Satan who sometimes stole away some information from the angels. But after the annunciation of the Prophet [SAWW](PBUH) it was made impossible for jinns and satans to overhear anything in the skies. Moreover, Kahin and others of his ilk would make predictions on the basis of certain signs and circumstantial evidence which could go wrong or right. This is so even to this day. Astrological prediction is also a form of foretelling but this is often wrong. Al-Irafah, or what is known to be as divination is also an indication of some future occurrence on the basis of certain causes and events. All the three occult arts supplement each other and also take the help of similar other things. In other words, these are all different forms of soothsaying. Geomancy also tries to tell about the invisible future. At-Tarq is the art of taking omen by striking birds with gravel on their wings or by throwing barley, etc., before them. In the latter formula, if a bird flies towards the right side, it would be a good omen; and if it goes towards the left it will be a bad one. All such things are unlawful and have been strictly forbidden by Islam. If anything predicted by these means comes by chance true, it does not furnish any justification for their validity.

Daily Qur'an & Hadith 05 March 2015 (13 Jamadi Al `Awwal 1436)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[37].Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks)

Ayat 1. By those (angels) ranged in ranks (or rows).

Ayat 2. By those (angels) who drive the clouds in a good way.

Ayat 3. By those (angels) who bring the Book and the Qur'an from Allah to mankind.

Ayat 4. Verily your Ilah (God) is indeed One (i.e. Allah);

Ayat 5. Lord of the heavens and of the earth, and all that is between them, and Lord of every point of the sun's risings. (None has the right to be worshipped but Allah).

Tafseer of Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks) Ayat 1. By those who range themselves in ranks, At a later stage, we shall study the general meaning of the adjurations in the Qur'an indicated by the particle wa. Here we may note that the last Surah (Yaseen) practically began with the adjuration "by the Qur'an, full of wisdom", emphasizing the fact that Revelation was the evidence by which we could learn the highest wisdom of the spiritual world. Here our attention is called in three verses or clauses, to three definite attitudes which illustrate the triumph of Good and the frustration of Evil. See the notes following. Two questions arise: (1) are the doers of the three things noted in verses 1-3 the same persons, whose actions or qualities are differently described, or are they three distinct sets of persons? (2) in either case, who are they? As to (1) the most authoritative view is that the three clauses describe the same set of persons in different aspects. As to (2) some take them to refer to angels, and others understand by them the good men, the men of God, who strive and range themselves in Allah's service. The words are perfectly general, and I interpret them to refer to both classes. The feminine form is grammatically used in Arabic idiom for the indefinite plural. In 37:165 below, the word saffun is used in the definite plural, and seems to be spoken by these beings, angels or men of God or both, according to how we interpret this verse. Ayat 2. And so are strong in repelling (evil), The three acts in verses 1-3 are consecutive, as shown by the particle fa. I understand them to mean that angels and good men (1) are ever ready to range themselves in ranks in the service of Allah and work in perfect discipline and accord at all times; (2) that they check and frustrate evil wherever they find it and they are strengthened in doing so by their discipline and their ranging themselves in ranks; and (3) that this service furthers the Kingdom of Allah and proclaims His Message and His glory to all creation. Ayat 3. And thus proclaim the Message (of Allah.! Ayat 4. Verily, verily, your Allah is one!- That divine Message is summed up in the gospel of Divine Unity, on which the greatest emphasis is laid: "verily, verily your God is One". It is a fact intimately connected with our own life and destiny.' Your Lord is one Who cares for you and cherishes you; you are dear to Him. And He is One. it is only He that you have to look to, the source of all goodness, love, and power. You are not the sport of many contending, forces or blind chances. There is complete harmony and unity in heaven and you have to put yourselves into unison with it-by discipline in ranks, by unity of plan and purpose in repelling evil, and by concerted action in promoting the Kingdom of God.' Here is the mystery of the manifold variety of creation pointing to the absolute Unity of the Creator. Ayat 5. Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all between them, and Lord of every point at the rising of the sun! Allah is the Lord of everything that exists-'the heavens and the earth, and all between them'. He is the Lord of the Mashariq of every point at the rising of the sun. As the Commentators tell us, there are in the solar year only two equinoctial days, when the sun rises due east: on every other the sun rises at a shifting point either north or south of due east. In 7:137 we have mashariq al ardi wa magharibaha, where the plural of the words for East and West is negligible, as the conjunction of the two embraces all points. The same may be said of 70:40, where Allah is called "Lord of all points in the East and the West". If we are speaking of longitudes, they may embrace all latitudes. In 55:17 Allah is called "Lord of the two Easts and the two Wests", referring to the extreme points in either case. A cursory reader may ask, why is only the East referred to here? The reply is that it is not so much the East as the rising of the sun, on which stress is laid. The Arabic mashriq or mashariq is close enough to the root word sharaqa, to suggest, not so much the East as the rising of the sun, especially when the plural form is used. The glorious sun rises from different points, as seen by us, but it illuminates the whole heaven and earth. It is an emblem of Unity.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Abu Dharr (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah  [SAWW](PBUH) said, "I see what you do not see and I hear what you do not hear; heaven has squeaked, and it has right to do so. By Him, in Whose Hand my soul is, there is not a space of four fingers in which there is not an angel who is prostrating his forehead before Allah, the Exalted. By Allah, if you knew what I know, you would laugh little, weep much, and you would not enjoy women in beds, but would go out to the open space beseeching Allah".

[At-Tirmidhi Hadith # 2312]

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah As-Saffat Ayat 1. By those (angels) ranged in ranks (or rows)"

1. This Hadith also highlights the importance of fear of Allah because the more awareness a Muslim has of the Majesty and Magnificence of Allah, the greater shall be the terror in his heart for His punishment and hope of His Mercy. With this state of mind, he will perform greater acts of obedience and abstain more rigidly from sins.

2. The Hadith also mentions the heaven teeming with angels who are all the time prostrating before Allah in worship. When this is the condition of the angels, who do not slack for a moment in the obedience of Allah, how important it is for man to worship Him because he is all the time violating commands of Allah. It is, therefore, incumbent on man to obey Allah and always seek His Help and Refuge.

Daily Qur'an & Hadith 04 March 2015 (12 Jamadi Al `Awwal 1436)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[36].Surah Yaseen [Yaseen]

Ayat 83. So Glorified is He and Exalted above all that they associate with Him, and in Whose Hands is the dominion of all things, and to Him you shall be returned.

Tafseer of Surah Yaseen, Ayat 83. So glory to Him in Whose hands is the dominion of all things: and to Him will ye be all brought back. All things were created by Allah; are maintained by Him; and will go back to Him. But the point of special interest to man is that man will also be brought back to Allah and is answerable to Him, and to Him alone. This Message is the core of Revelation; it explains the meaning of the Hereafter; and it fitly closes a Surah specially connected with the name (Yaseen) of the Prophet.

*These are the last Ayats of 36th Surah of Al-Quran Surah Yaseen; this Surah contained 83 Ayats, Insha Allah from tomorrow 37th Surah of Al-Quran Surah As-Saffat will starts.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said,  "There are two statements that are light for the tongue to remember, heavy in the Scales and are dear to the Merciful: `Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi, Subhan-Allahil-Azim [Glory be to Allah and His is the praise, (and) Allah, the Greatest is free from imperfection)'.''

[Al-Bukhari Book 08, Chapter 75, Hadith # 415].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Yaseen Ayat 83. So Glorified is He and Exalted above all that they associate with Him, This Hadith affirms that man's actions carry weight. On the Day of Judgment, his actions will be cast into the Balance. At that time Allah will endow these actions with weight, or according to some scholars, those records which register man's actions will be weighed. This is quite possible for the reason that Almighty Allah is Capable of weighing things without even their physical form. This discussion apart, when actions will be cast into the Balance, the formula mentioned in the Hadith, the utterance of which is very easy, will prove weighty. Every Muslim should make it a practice to repeat them frequently.

Daily Qur'an & Hadith 03 March 2015 (11 Jamadi Al `Awwal 1436)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[36].Surah Yaseen [Yaseen]

Ayat 81. Is not He, Who created the heavens and the earth Able to create the like of them? Yes, indeed! He is the All-Knowing Supreme Creator.

Ayat 82. Verily, His Command, when He intends a thing, is only that He says to it, "Be!" and it is!

Tafseer of Surah Yaseen, Ayat 81 and 82, "Is not He Who created the heavens and the earth able to create the like thereof?" - Yea, indeed! for He is the Creator Supreme, of skill and knowledge (infinite)! Cf. 79:27. Which is the more difficult to create-man, or the heavens and the earth, with all creatures? Allah created the heavens and the earth, with all creatures, and He can create worlds and worlds like these in infinity. To him it is small matter to raise you up for the Hereafter! Ayat 82. Verily, when He intends a thing, His Command is, "be", and it is! And His creation is not dependent on time, on instruments or means, or any conditions whatsoever. Existence waits on His Will, or Plan, or Intention. The moment He wills a thing, it becomes His Word or Command, and the thing forthwith comes into existence. Cf. 2:177; 16:40.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah  [SAWW](PBUH) said, "When one of you supplicates, let him be decisive and he should not say: `O Allah, bestow upon me such and such if You wish', because no one has the power to compel Him.''

[Al-Bukhari Book 08, Chapter 75, Hadith # 350].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Yaseen Ayat 82. Verily, His Command, when He intends a thing, is only that He says to it, "Be!" and it is!" One should pray to Allah will full confidence that He will answer his prayers. One should also persist in praying and never give in to despair.

Daily Qur'an & Hadith 02 March 2015 (10 Jamadi Al `Awwal 1436)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[36].Surah Yaseen [Yaseen]

Ayat 79. Say: (O Muhammad  [SAWW](PBUH) "He (Allah) will give life to them Who created them for the first time! And He is the All-Knower of every creation!"

Ayat 80. He, Who produces for you fire out of the green tree, when behold! You kindle therewith.

Tafseer of Surah Yaseen, Ayat 79 and 80, Say, "He will give them life Who created them for the first time! for He is Well-versed in every kind of creation! Allah's creative artistry is evident in every phase of nature, and it works every minute or second. The more man understands himself and the things within his reach, the more he realizes this. How foolish, then, for anyone to set imaginary limits to Allah's power? There are more ways of creation than are dreamt of in man's imagination. Ayat 80. "The same Who produces for you fire out of the green tree, when behold! ye kindle therewith (your own fires)! Even older and more primitive than the method of striking fire against steel and flint is the method of using twigs of trees for the purpose. In the E.B., 14th edition, 9:262, will be found a picture of British Guyana boys making a fire by rotating a stick in a round hole in a piece of wood lying on the ground. The Arab method was to use a wooden instrument called the Zinad. It consisted of two pieces to be rubbed together. The upper was called the 'Ajar or Zand, and the lower the Markh. The Markh is a twig from a kind of spreading tree, the Cynanchuin viminale, of which the branches are bare, without leaves or thorns. When they are tangled together, and a wind blows, they get ignited and strike fire (Lane's Arabic Lexicon). In modern Arabic Zand is by analogy applied to the flint piece used for striking fire with steel.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Hudhaifah  (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) used to say in the morning: "Allahumma bika asbahna, wa bika Amsaina, wa bika nahya, wa bika namutu, wa ilaikan-nushur (O Allah! With Your Power we have come to the morning, with Your Power we come to the evening, with Your Power we live, and we die, and to You will we return).'' In the evening he would say: "Allahumma bika Amsaina, wa bika nahya, wa bika namutu, wa ilaikan-nushur (O Allah! With Your Power, we have come to the evening, by You do we live, by You do we die, and to You is the return).''

[Al-Bukhari Book 01, Chapter 04 Hadith # 247].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Yaseen Ayat 79, "(Allah) will give life to them Who created them for the first time!" It is desirable to recite the invocations cited in the Hadith in the morning and the evening.
